Hi, I'm Colin Gover - STEAM Educator at Marina View School (NZ). I am a “maker” and a “doer” I often have so many plans and designs in my head - it hurts! But it’s great fun to share my ideas and passion with my students. I love finding solutions to problems with the students and to conceptualise, design, prototype and eventually make it with the help of the 3D printer is a bonus!

How my Students use 3D Printing
We already use our 3D printers as part of our inquiry process and integrate its use in all subject areas. We use “STEAM” as a way to solve real world problems and quite often our prototypes will have a 3D printed component in it. We have collaborated with businesses to create 3D printed concepts and solutions and right now we have been asked to design an eyeball holder as a medical student teaching aid… the boys will love that!
The Importance of 3D Printing in Education
3D printing enables students to bring their imagination to life through their creativity and digital technology skills. It provides students with opportunities to learn valuable skills that play an important role now and the future. With 3D printing students are no longer consumers - they are thinkers, designers, and creators of the future.
My Thoughts on PrintLab Classroom
When you strike a problem or an issue that you can’t solve right away we say “go further up the tree”. We ask the students “who or what” is your “go to” person or website? For us, as teachers, when we are looking for inspiration, guidance or some “just in time learning” then Printlab Classroom is a good start! So why not the students too? To collaborate with students in other countries to solve the real world problem is very exciting and could start with Printlab Classroom!
My Advice for Teachers Getting Started with 3D Printing
Start SMALL - choose a topic and do a series of lessons from a unit from Printlab Classroom with a small group of students - 6 to 8 is good - choose an easy lesson plan and sequence that’s easily achievable, for you and the students and give it a go - just make sure the students know that you are in with them as a learner on the learning journey.
