Hi, I'm Kristen Powell - an assistive technology (AT) trainer and consultant with Chester County Intermediate Unit in Pennsylvania. I got involved with 3D printing over the last school year through the AT Maker movement. I have attended trainings on how to create 3D devices and assisted in creating assistive devices. 3D printing will open up a new door to low cost, accessible devices for some students with challenges accessing their curriculum while increasing their independency.

How my Students will use 3D Printing
We anticipate that students will be introduced to assistive technology and 3D printing through partnerships with STEM teachers, gen ed teachers, and special education teachers in Chester County.
The Importance of 3D Printing in Education
3D printing assistive technology will help students learn about the challenges some students face throughout their day. It will provide them with a new way to help-out their fellow classmates while learning how to create new cutting-edge technology with a purpose.
My Thoughts on PrintLab Classroom
I have unique opportunity to share the PrintLab curriculum with teachers in 12 school districts in our Chester County. I am very excited to introduce the Assistive Device Academy to teachers interested in creating unique devices for students with special needs. I also hope to have our students with special needs assist in the creation of the assistive technology. I believe it empowers students to envision new possibilities and may even inspire some students to a pursue a career in engineering/design or special education.
My Advice for Teachers Getting Started with 3D Printing
The advice I have for teachers is to explore the potential of creating 3D printed technologies for students with special needs. I am certain that our students will excel in the creation of assistive devices but even better, they will also know that they have contributed to making a difference in someone’s life!
