What is an Open Badge?
An Open Badge is a digital credential that recognises and verifies skills or achievements, containing embedded metadata about the issuer, criteria, and evidence of the accomplishment.
The PrintLab Certification Program is a comprehensive, tiered learning pathway that equips you with essential skills and recognised credentials in 3D CAD, 3D printing, and design innovation. Although optional, we recommend using the program to guide your journey through PrintLab, while earning certifications along the way! There are 2 versions of the program – one for educators and one for designers (including students). Both versions offer three stages, each building your expertise.
Upon completing each level, you’ll earn an open badge certification—a verifiable, shareable micro-credential that you can display on your email signature, resume, social media, and digital portfolios. These badges help you showcase your skills to peers, employers, educational institutions, and the broader community. The program is flexible, self-paced, and empowers you to acquire industry-relevant skills and apply them directly to real-world projects.
*Please note that certification applications are only accepted from users with an active PrintLab subscription and not free trial users.
Before we look at how to obtain each certification level, below is a brief overview of what Open Badges are and how they work. If you’d like a more in-depth explanation, check out Badgr’s video here.
An Open Badge is a digital credential that recognises and verifies skills or achievements, containing embedded metadata about the issuer, criteria, and evidence of the accomplishment.
Our Open Badges are issued as digital PNG image files, but unlike standard images, they contain metadata that verifies the authenticity of the achievement and recipient. Think of metadata as hidden information attached to the file, even though it's not visible on the image itself.
While the badge information is embedded in the PNG file itself, the metadata and authenticity are also verified and securely stored on trusted digital credential platforms. We use the well-established Badgr platform for this purpose. Although not a requirement, you can create a Badgr account and build up a 'backpack' of micro-credentials from various learning providers.
You can display your Open Badge on your email signature, resume, social media, and digital portfolios, making your skills and achievements easily verifiable by peers, employers, educational institutions, and the broader community.
